Stanford Optional Essay Question

by awadhani » Fri Oct 07, 2011 4:45 am
Does Stanford give a lot of weightage to the innovations you did while at work - even if they don't particularly relate to the team .... eg in my Private Equity job I designed an innovative structure that made my Fund gain $60 Mn on an investment of $85 Mn (and I was the junior-most team member) and now that structure is used as a standard investment structure by the Fund (even though I don't work there anymore) .... Do you think this can be a powerful story for the essay "Tell us about a time when you had a lasting impact on your organization"?

The reason I ask this is I have been told by some people that the above story is not really something which would excite the Stanford Adcom as it does not deal with people / leadership but rather with working around nos. Do let me know what your take is on this. Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I think this certainly can be a great example. One question I have for you is how long ago did this occur? You don't want to select something that happened a long time ago, but something perhaps a bit more recent - in the last couple of years.

Best,

Stacey

Thanks Stacy. This does fit in the Stanford 3 yr window - I devised this structure somewhere at the end of 2009 / beginning of 2010.

This will make for a great example and since it's within the 3 year window it's a great fit for the prompt.

Best,

Stacey
