When to take a prep course?

Hi everyone! Just a quick question...

I'll be writing the GMAT in February and I intend on taking a prep course. I'm just wondering if I should take the prep course first and then study on my own with OG books, or should I get started on my own first and take the prep course closer to the exam date? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm simultaneously studying while taking the class. I use the principles and strategies learned in class and apply them to my studying. The result is no wasted effort. Additionally, you won't fall into any bad habits if you're doing everything the "right" way.

studying...

It is my belief that you should absolutely take a course, then study on your own. Depending on the course, you can bring some of your outside study to your tutor/teacher...but you don't want to develop or enhance bad habits by studying on your own...with good instruction, you prevent this, and run a straight course to top scores (we hope!)
