old ratio vs. new ratio

by Fractal » Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:57 am
the ratio of the amount of Alexs fuel oil bill for the month of February to the amount of his bill for the month of January was 3/2. If the fuel oil bill for February had been $40 more, the corresponding ratio would have been 5/3.

How much was Alexs fuel oil bill for January?

Does anybody know a good approch for this and similiar more difficult questions?

thx

F/J = 3/2

(F+40)/J = 5/3

=> F/J + 40/J = 5/3

=> 40/J = 5/3 - 3/2 = 1/6 => J = 40x6 = 240

this PS is not as difficult as it seems
consider bill for February is F and J for bill for january
F/J=3/2 or 2F=3J
(F+40)/j=5/3 or J=3(F+40)/5 solve this we will have J=240
is 240 the right answer?
