All of the stocks on the over-the-counter market are designed by either 4-letter or a 5-letter code that is created by using the 26 letters of the alphabet. Which of the following gives the maximum number of different stocks that can be designated with these codes?

A) 2(26^5)
B) 26(26^4)
C) 27(26^4)
D) 26(26^5)
E) 27 (26^5)

I can't find the way to connect the problem and the answer, what is the approach here? Also I have a question - is this related to sets or combinations/permutation?

the right answer is C)

THANK YOU!

nos of 4 letters code possible = 26*26*26*26

nos of 5 letter codes possible = 26^5

total =26^5 + 26^4

26^4(26+1)

=26^4(27)
