which schools to apply to

by gravitas » Wed Aug 06, 2008 7:38 am
I'm very interested in transitioning into a career in investment banking, trading and/or corporate finance.

My gmat is 670 and gpa is 3.6 and I also have a law degree and am a licensed attorney. Live in MN.

Anyway, was wondering what schools might be good for this area. I understand I probably can't get into the elite ones, but I don't want to work at Goldman or move to NYC anyway. Would love to end up at a boutqiue or middle market firm and go that route.

Any suggestions for tier 2-3 schools that are partiuclarly strong in this area? Thanks for any help guys....

Hi G,

Most bulge bracket and top middle-market investment banks recruit only from top MBA programs. If you are interested in a smaller/regional IB, they might recruit from middle ranked / regional MBA programs. Esp if you are able to tap into the school's alumni in investment banking.

Do you have a regional preference for your MBA? Do you want to stay in the midwest?

Not necessarily.

I'm from the Twin Cities and U of Minnesota looks nice. I did undergrad at Madison and just read about their MBA which sounds good for finance as well. I also am considering Tulane--their finance program is supposed to be strong. Other than that, open to both coasts and also to Chicago schools.

Just wondering what kind of tier 2/3's have the strongest networks for investment banking though.

Then again, maybe a 670 doesn't necessarily rule me out of a more elite school?

G -
As you probably read, this year is going to be very competitive for admissions into a top MBA program. That said, 670 is a good score, and would make you competitive for a top 25 / second tier program.

Its hard to gauge which schools would give you the best edge into a middle tier investment banking outside of a top program. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about top regional programs in the midwest. A few good regional programs (outside the top 25) include Indiana, Purdue, Norte Dame, Case Western, Olin.

If you are interested in getting your MBA next year, you should consider applying to a 2-3 'stretch' schools and 2-3 'safety' schools. Do a bit more research and try to figure out what schools make more sense for your background and interests.

Regards,

NP
