Need help with profile evaluation

by AyushGarg » Mon Aug 22, 2011 4:01 am
Hello

I need some guidance from the experts here. I was wondering if my profile is good enough for an MBA or I should wait and gain some more hard skills.

My Profile-

Age: 26

Work Experience: I have 5 years of experience in IT industry as a QA Engineer. I have worked for Accenture and TCS. I do not have any International experience.

Academic Background:
10th Standard: 77.2%
12th Standard: 81.6%
Mechanical Engineering: 69% (Not from an NIT or IIT)

GMAT: 720(1st Attempt)

I understand that one's ability to get desired job post MBA depends on current profile and I am not sure whether I have enough hard skills for a career in consulting.

Please suggest if I should gain some project management experience and international experience and apply after 1-2 years. Otherwise please suggest some schools which I should target this year.

With your 720, you should think about applying this year. If you're ready, why would you wait more? Plus the project management experience you are likely to gain is not as strong as some other options. If you tell me, you will get a promotion and lead a team of 20, then that might be an option, but if you will continue to slowly move your way up the ladder, I don;t know how much sense that makes.

As for what schools you should target, that is up to YOU. I can tell you which schools you would have good chances at (Start looking at top schools outside of the top 10, though you can also apply to some top 10 schools). If you post a short list and a wee bit about your goals, I can give you my feedback.

As said, waiting for another year is an option only if you foresee an outstanding work assignment. Else, it will not make any perceptible difference. Further, you already have 5 years experience and it will only become progressively tougher from here (if you wait).

Your GMAT is fine, but you need to do some research on schools where you have a decent chance & where you want to go. As far as a career in consulting is concerned, you would find that they take people from all sorts of backgrounds. It more depends on whether the top firms recruit at your school or not.
My advice: go back to the drawing board, figure out your top achievements, diversify your applications & apply this year itself.

Good Luck!

I echo Jon's sentiments in that you should be considering applying this year (as your work experience is about the average) and that we need to know more about your goals before we can guide you on some schools.

Hello

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I wish to work in consulting industry for companies like Accenture and Deloitte. I have shortlisted ISB, Nayang Business School, Crainfield. But I am not sure if pursing an MBA from UK would be a wise decision in current economic scenario. I can pursue an MBA from USA only if the school offers significant scholarship and has strong career services. I am looking at Emory, Rice, Boston University, Kelley, Tippie, Texas A&M Mays. But I guess I will apply to not more than 5 schools. Please suggest which schools seem to be best fit for me. Am I missing out any better options?

Thanks

Hi Ayush,

I agree with everyone that you are ready to apply this year. Waiting more would not add much value in your current profile. Here's my take on your school shortlist:

You can take a shot at ISB and Emory. You'll have a good shot at the consulting firms quoting your analytical skills in QA. You have a safe shot at Rice, BU and Tippie. Mays and Nanyang would be considered within reach for you. ISB has a deadline in Sept and Nanyang will open up soon. So you can work on the other 5 schools while you have already applied to ISB.

We suggest removing Mays and Tippie from your list. Instead of Mays and Tippie, you can apply to Georgetown. Take a shot there, we've had admits there with similar profiles.

Hello Ayush

Since you are aiming for top schools then a score above 700 is desirable. However GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well.

Generally most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 5 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could put in a strong set of essays.

So Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors."

Hence the quality of your work, your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature.

I would recommend you perusing the employment reports of your target schools to see if your target employers are represented there. Also, ask admissions staff about whether international applicants receive scholarships and if so what percentage of the class. I would also recommend you attend information sessions as well (schools travel around the world with events like the MBA Tour).

One word of caution. You seem to have counter-goals in that you wish to attend schools at which top consulting companies recruit but also will only go to a U.S. school that offers scholarships to international applicants. Often the schools that offer these scholarships are the lower-ranked schools at which top consulting companies do not recruit. So you might have difficulty finding schools that fulfill both criteria.
