#In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the united states was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
A.twice as fast as
B.twice as fast as it was in
C.twice what it was in
D.two times faster than that of
E.two times greater than

OA: C

Please explain.

IMO D, E can safely & surely be taken out of the equation.
Of the options A,B,C

A: is not right as it seems as if you are trying to measure "the 1970's" not "the rate of growth IN THE 1970's."
B : Seems correct for the same explanation as A.
C : twice of what it was in the 1970's seems a better way than what is given in the question.

Thus ans is C.

IMO C

parallelism "in the 1080's" and "in the 1970's"

B in comparison with C is wordy

A,D & E are not parallel

IMO C

Also

A) twice as fast as
rate not compared, "as fast as" is redundant as we say "rate of increase"

(D) two times faster than that of
"faster" is redundant as we say "rate of increase"

E) two times greater than
rate not compared,"greater" is redundant as we say "rate of increase"


ALSO use DOUBLE,TRIPLE as verbs and TWICE ,THRICE for comparisons

Twice/greater/two times..does'nt countable/non countable terms come into picture here??We are talking about "RATE" so should'nt we be using "two times" as apposed to "twice"??

From concession stand point 'twice' beats 'two times'. Further, two times means on two occassions - changes the meaning.

here, we are comparing rate of increase - which is twice what (the rate of increase) in 1970. What - functioning as a pronoun
