RUN ON SENTENCE: A Little Confusing

this is taken from KNEWTON:


"exemplified by their use of inferior quality plywood when constructing a floor in order to increase their profit margins"

I read that the sentence above is a run on sentence. Just needed some clarity on how this could be true, because when i read it out loud, it feels as if the sentence can stand on its own. (its not dependent) Correct me if i'm wrong..

Please post the full sentence.

Run-on sentence and dependent-independent clauses are not same.

Run-on sentences occur when we joun two clauses without a conjunction/subordinator, using only a comma. If we join two independent clause with a comma, its a run on sentence - but they both can exist independently.

Great explanation avik.ch; maybe an example can illustrate your thought.

In the Gmat, they make it a little bit more complicated by introducing a modifier between the subject.

The construction of the park,which is the biggest in the country, began in 2002,was finished one year later.

You see how the two sentences are just joined by a comma? At a first glance you may read it as "The construction" "was finished" but this is wrong because the two clauses need to be joined by a conjunction.
