GMAT Tutor

by caramel3536 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 6:23 am
Hi all,

Does anyone know of good tutors in NYC, especially GMAT Math? I specifically want a GMAT expert and not someone who does SAT or GRE as I have a good handle on the material, but having glitches with the application aspect.
If anyone know someone like this please let me know. Oh, one other important thing, I'm not looking for someone who charges $100/hr. I want someone with reasonable rates.

Thanks for your help.

We used to have some GMAT Tutors on the forums. One of them I remember was from NYC... though I'm not certain about it...

try searching for "Ian Strike"

I can understand your desperation but duplicate posting (opening more than one thread in different sections) is one way of spamming. :? )

I am involved with a new website which has a directory of freelance GMAT tutors. We currently have listings from four tutors in New York:

www.gmatix.com/tutors

You can contact a tutor by clicking on his or her name. This service is completely free to use.

Please note that the tutors listed are not affiliated with gmatix; we provide the listing for information only, and it is up to you to decide whether a tutor is appropriate for your needs. You may also have success finding a tutor on craigslist- search for 'GMAT' under 'Services', and you will find many listings.

If any freelance tutors are interested in including a listing (entirely for free) in the gmatix tutor directory, please do send me a PM.

Most all of the experts here have amazing math tutors in NYC - - as well as the ability to answer your questions online. Each company has tutors who will help you master the skills you need, though each of us, I suspect, will espouse different philosophies on how, and what, will help you get your highest score. Once you find someone here, or elsewhere, with whom you resonate, it will behoove you to explore how the person (or company) plans on helping you, personally, manifest your best score.

Keep in mind that going to business school, and the related hoops you need to jump through, are an investment in your future. This involves a commitment to the process as well as a respect for the financial compensation for getting top service, if that is what you seek.

You might get lucky with a 'reasonably' priced tutor (I'm not sure what out means, exactly.) This might be a tutor from Craigslist who put out their shingle.

Things to watch out for:

>Beware of someone who depends on only commercially available materials, and who doesn't weigh in on your personal strengths and weaknesses.

>Be wary about working with someone who will simply regurgitate math without a deep understanding of GMAT math.

You might get lucky and find yourself a superstar through the reasonable regular channels.

Getting accepted into top tier schools translates into higher paying jobs later on down the line - - so now is not a time to skimp on great service. But of course, it's always up to you and your budget. If you want the best, you'll often wind up paying for it. That is the way it works. Especially in the business world, right?

Be sure to work with someone who has endorsements, great references, a track record of success and has been vetted by a company or endorsed by places like beat the gmat, consultants, other professionals, or people you trust.

Let any of us know if you have questions!

Good Luck!
