How to score 38+ in verbal

by nittinj » Sun Sep 28, 2008 12:50 am
Hello fellas,

I was wondering if someone can throw light on minimim no. of questions which needs to be correct if one wants to score 38+ in verbal ( passive voice )

- I think first 5-6 should be right,
- Last 2-3 dont matter much
- Overall out of 41 - 35 should be correct

All the three conditions must be fulfilled to get 38+

Someone told me that
- infact upto 3 incorrect in each section,
- first 3-4 correct
-overall 32+ correct is sufficient to score 38+

pls let me know if anybody has ne different idea/ opinion.

There's really no way to tell how many questions you need to get right. Remember that the GMAT is a computer adaptive test. The harder questions are worth more, as are the questions at the beginning of the test. So, your score is not only based upon the number you get right, but also their difficulty and placement. If you did really well at the beginning, it's possible that you could be getting every other question wrong towards the end and still score well.

In general, to score at that level, you should be aiming to get virtually all the easier questions right, a definite majority of medium level questions, and about half of the harder questions.

Thnks for the info...i just want to quantify watever u have said...and

to convert ur idea into numbers, as per my understanding as of now -

1. Easy ques - 10-12 - avg - 11Q - 10C -1W
2. Medium - 20-22-avg - 21Q - 18C - 3W
3.Hard -9Q-6C-3W

total - 34C- 7W
however if u get initial 8-10 correct, i thnk u can still get 38+

by scoring 32C - 9W

on avg - 33C- 8W

The only rules to do well in verbal (put me in 99th percentile):

1) after 10 Questions you should have 57 mins remaining
2) after 20 Questions you should have 38 mins remaining
3) after 30 Questions you should have 20 mins remaining
4) after 41 Questions you should have 0 mins remaining

If you fall behind by more than one minute. Guess on one question. Do not wait to run out of time at the end of the section and guess multiple questions in a row. Do not compromise RC reading time as weak reading will impact more than one question.

Generally, people tend to be slower on CR than SC .. by guessing on CR you can make up more time then by guessing on SC.

If after 20 questions or so you are significantly ahead of the above schedule you should slow down. You are likely missing something. I found that being ahead on the first 5-10 questions is OK if you are very strong in verbal. But the harder questions that follow should naturally slow you down.

Forget the quantification that you are showing in the above posts. It will not work as the CAT algorithm is smarter than any rule you could possibly post in this forum.

I agree with the above: don't try to outsmart the test. The best thing you can do is study hard and be smart about pacing. The rest will take care of itself.
