How to explain a difficult semester...

by Lindze01 » Wed Jul 08, 2009 4:23 pm
Hi Stacy,

I graduated from a Big Ten school with over a 3.0 GPA. However, on all the applications, they ask about your upper division GPA. First semester of my junior year I was robbed at gunpoint, had post traumatic stress and missed lots of class thus my grades suffered and I got a 2.0 that term. How do I explain this diplomatically without sounding like a victim?

Thank you for the assistance!

Dear Lindze01,

I'm sorry to hear about your rough semester, but it is certainly understandable. I'm not sure it is necessary to explicitly address one bad semester, but if you feel you should, then you want to focus on how the other semesters are more representative of your ability. So, you would note your situation much like you did in your post and then go on to explain how the other semesters are a better reflection of your academic ability.

Good luck,
Lisa
