Ages Problem

Laura is 18 years old today. How many years ago was Laura twice as old as her brother if the sum of their ages in 4 years will be 38 years?

a) 2
b) 3
c) 4
d) 5
e) 6


correct answer is B.) 3, but i always get e.) 6 when solving this. can anyone help?

Laura is 18 years old today.

L = 18

the sum of their ages in 4 years will be 38 years?

L + 4 + B + 4 = 38

18 + 8 + B = 38

B = 12

Subtract 6 from each and you get 6 and 12.

some gmat prep course at the university where the instructor gave us the answers but no explanations...
