To find the coordinates of point C

by gmattesttaker2 » Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:55 am
Hello,

Can you please assist with this:

In a rectangular system, if points (-5, -2) and C are symmetrical to line y = x, what
are the (x, y) coordinates of point C?

OA:
(-2, -5)
I am not really clear with how to solve this symmetry works. Can you please assist?

Thanks a lot,
Sri

Hi Sri,

In these sorts of graphing questions, the word "symmetric" means "mirror image on the other side of the line."

For this question, try drawing the line Y = X and plotting the point (-5, -2); this point is NOT on the line, but you can use it to figure out the symmetric/mirror-image of the other point on the other side of the line.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the suggestion. I created a graph and was able to see that (-2,-5) is the mirror image of (-5, -2). In general, is interchanging the x and y co-ordinates the correct approach for these kinds of questions? Thanks a lot.

Best Regards,
Sri
