HELP! GMAT Dillema

by rhussey » Tue May 14, 2013 9:31 am
I am signed up to take the GMAT this week, but have still been scoring on the practice test well below my target of 600 (around the 500 range). I have everything in for my MBA applications except a GMAT score. In this situation, how should I move forward? 1) Sit for the test and reschedule if the score is still low. 2) Sit for the test for the experience and decline the score and reschedule another test. 3) Just reschedule the test now to allow for more prep time to get closer to my goal in the practice.

At this point, I am paying the full fee no matter what decision I make. Not sure what consequences on my application process might come from each decision.

If you are not ready, I would postpone. Honestly a 100-point jump typically takes months not days. There is no value in posting a poor score.

I agree. You should take the test only when you are well- prepared and are confident of doing well. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. What are the negatives to taking the exam and declining the score?

None really honestly... Just the 4 hours of agony.

Hi rhussey,

You should postpone your GMAT in that case. Prepare hard for the next time, start taking more practice tests. Schedule your GMAT when you think you are are ready and can score more than the targeted scores.

All the best!
Cheers!

I agree with the responses here, and had a good laugh at Jim's "4 hours of agony" quip!

If you decline the score, it will show on the school GMAT report as a declined score. That won't be held against you in any way, unless you are repeatedly taking the exam and declining the score. That would raise some questions - by schools, and probably by PearsonVue as well (due to concerns for security of the test questions). If you reschedule, it will not show on your school GMAT report.

If you went ahead with taking the test when you do not feel ready, then you are just taking a very expensive practice test.

Here's your to-do list:

1. Reschedule exam for at least 8 weeks out - maybe more.
2. Sit down and create an aggressive GMAT study plan (Do you need a tutor? Online help? In person class? Get those scheduled right now). How many hours per week can you commit to this?
3. Take an online diagnostic GMAT to help you identify the trouble areas.
4. Begin your study plan, and create an error log to help you identify the types of problems that give you the most difficulty (so you can focus your study efforts).

Now go! Get off the forums and start studying! :)
