I have done my undergraduation from an indian institution which is famous
here in india but not so famous in the world?will it handicap my chances of
getting into a top tier school [booth,fuqua,wharton] ?if yes,then there r
applicants from argentina and italy [who get selected at booth and wharton]
who have done their undergraduation from an institution which might be
famous in their respective countries but no one other than their native
people{i mean other country people] have ever heard of it. how is this
component of the mba application[UNDERGRAD INSTITUION] reviewed and what is
its importance?

Well, the first thing to do is to INFORM the Adcoms of what they want to know. It's not like you can go ahead and write "Hey guys my school is awesome! No really! Trust me!: Instead you need to find concrete FACTS that make your school/department seem impressive. For example "The Time of India just ranked school X as the country's number one program for Subject Z" or something like that that is CONCRETE.

As for applying from an unknown school you should know that the Top 10 US programs do tend to pull the majority of their Indian students from the IIT graduate pool, because they know that they can trust this "pre-selection" already made by the Indian education system. It doesn't mean you can't get in if you are not an IIT graduate, but m

If your profile is strong in other areas, i don't think it should be a problem or hurt your admission chances.

Admissionado is right about providing concrete support about your undergrad school. If it is famous, as you say, what is it famous for? If their standards are high, you don't need to be concerned. And since you mention Wharton, Booth and Fuqua, do you otherwise have the requisite conditions for applying to the MBA program at a top-tier school? You must know what these are. Although the reputation of your undergrad school can certainly be an advantage, if your overall performance and GPA are excellent at another well-known institution that is what will stand out.
