I am interested in applying to the US/Singapore for an MBA and was struggling in deciding schools that would fit both my expectations and background.

1) I'm a Chartered Accountant with 3 years of relevant work experience in Risk Advisory and Transaction Advisory.
2) I graduated in Bachelor of Commerce with 82%
3) I have strong academic credentials
(2nd at Grade X CBSE Board among 2 million students , 1st at Grade XII in Maharashtra among 150,000 students, All India Rank 34 at Chartered Accountancy exams among 50,000 students; also a recipient of the Tata scholarship for excellence in academics)
4) I'm also a recipient of the Dhirubhai Ambani Scholarship for extra curriculars (debates, marketing events, environmental events)
5) I organised a TEDx conference in Mumbai last year (3rd largest in Asia)
6) 5) Unfortunately, my GMAT score is only 650.

I'm interested in a finance concentration for an MBA and am looking to be hired by the best consultancy, investment banking firms.

Please let me know my chances at UCLA, Ross, McCombs, Tuck and NUS. Can you suggest a few school names for me to begin with?

Hello there Nikita,
With three years work experience, the first thing I would ask myself if I were you is: Can I get higher on the GMAT? You are certainly young enough and have the time, and if you can do better I'd highly recommend you putting in all your efforts to do so, because at this GMAT the GMAt score is highly determinant of where you can and should apply and right now, for example with your 650, your school list is a bit too tough.

My personal take on things is that it is always worth it to go to the best school you can get into, even if it may mean waiting one more year. And that will be highly dependent on you getting the best GMAT score you can.

Hope this helps,

Many thanks Jon. I am planning to retake the GMAT and improve my score. The question remains, if I do score above 700, does my profile hold good for an application to the aforementioned schools?

Hi Nikita,
I agree with Jon. Try improving your GMAT score. Additionally, think about your specific goals after MBA. All the top schools have Investment Banking firms and Consulting firms coming in to campus. What's more important is - why IB/MC? What interests you in those roles? Where do you see yourself long term where most IB/MC roles transfer to corporate strategy roles in 5 years. Is that your long term vision?
Once you clarify your career journey, choice of school becomes easier. NUS and McCombs are little low in ranking but others are all good.
I wouldn't worry too much about school selection but get your thinking aligned.
Please get in touch with me ([email protected]) if you have further questions or doubts to clarify.
Thanks,
Indradeep
