Help with Sentence Correction

by mahesh7 » Sun Feb 22, 2009 7:41 pm
hi

I have completed OG11, Kaplan Primer and Manhattan guide on Sentence Correction. I do understand the rules explained in Manhattan Guide. However, when taking the tests, I am failing miserably in Sentence Correction. My success rate in SC is about 50%. What can I do in the next 6 weeks to get it to 80%? Taking the test in the first week of April. Any advise?

Thanks
Mahesh

are you referring to Manhattan Sentence Correction(MSC) guide by mentioning Manhattan guide? if not I would recommend you get it, its really great resource for SC.

regarding improving scores...it depends how you do the practice?

MSC has nice approach it has different chapters for different rules like parallelism e.g. , at the end of chapter it gives you list of OG11 questions which are based on particular rule.

in other case it might work for you to say take 20-30 SC questions and solve them at one go without checking answer but again it might be a different way that will work for you.

all the best

hi

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I am referring to Manhattan Sentence Correction guide. I did the chapters, tried to apply the rules i learned in each chapter to OG11 etc. However, when I take practice tests such as GMAT prep, I am only scoring 50% in SC. Not sure what I can do to improve my score in SC.

Thanks
mahesh

I am also going through the samething. In my case i figured out that i dont have good basics :D . I couldnt even identify parts of speech properly. So i have been to this site https://englishgrammar101.com/
and read all the basics. ( go for individual study in this study, If it asks for login iD close the window and reopen ). It helped me alot, now atleast i can understand the explanations given in manhattan series. I hope this helps :D

You have to carefully review the OG11 problems. Understand why the right answer for each question is correct, AND AND AND why each wrong answer for each question is incorrect.

Also, scrutinize your own writing. When you write and email, when you write a post on this forum, when you write anything, examine it from an SC rules perspective. This will teach you some grammatical errors that you think sound right/natural to you.

Also, download Spidey's notes and Sahlil's notes form the resources section of this website.

Best of luck!

I also had problems in SC and tried several books and websites on this. Especially on sentence correction I fould Princeton Review "Verbal Workout for the GMAT" the best resource for such problems. You should try this one.
