mgmat-election

Spokesperson: In the 2006 election of the city mayor, 55% of the voters were female. All the voters were between ages 18 and 70 and 2/3 of them supported the incumbent mayor. The incumbent mayor won the election with a substantially greater number of votes than any other candidate.

If the statements made by the Spokesperson are true, then which of the following must be true?

A. At least 1/2 of the female voters supported the incumbent mayor.

B. The incumbent mayor received stronger support from the female voters than from the male voters.

C.There were no other candidates in the election who received more than 30% of all the votes.

D.45% of the voters in the election were male and none of them were 75 years old.

E.If the proportion of male and female voters in the city remains the same, the incumbent mayor is also likely to win the next election.

plz explain yr answers

IMO D

Lets say there are total of 300 voters.

Female -165 Male-135

200 supported the mayor.

A. Atleast 1/2 of the female voters means atleast 82 voters.

But what if 135 males supported fully.Remaining voters(out of 200 voters)is 65.Only 65 female voters supported the mayor.

So this is not true.

B.We dont know the proportion of male and female voters who supported the mayor. Not ture.

C.2/3 of x people supported the mayor and 1/3 of x people supported the other candidates.

1/3 of x is approximately 33%.

Not true.

D.The argument 55% were female and 45% must be Male. Also all voters were bw ages 18 and 70.
So none of the males were 75 years old.Hence true.

E.The mayor win is based on percentage of people support. What if proportion remains same and does not get enough people support. Not true

IMO D.

First point here is Voting is diufferent from supporting. I may support X but vote for Y.
Second point is We do not know how many peple contested. It can be 2 or ten or anything..
Now, lets look at options.
A: We are told that 2/3 of the voters supported mayor. which is 66% of voters.
We know that 55% are women. So 45% are men. It can be that all 45% men and 21% women support mayor.
21 is less than 55/2. - OUT.

B. For the same reason a sabove B is also Out.

C.As we stated in the beginning, there can be any number of candidates. Passage just says that mayor won the election with a substantially greater number of votes. No percentages are mentioned.

D.45% of the voters in the election were male and none of them were 75 years old. This is a direct decendent from the Combination of premises in the passage that 55% are women and the voters are between 18 and 70 age.

E.Irrelevant to our passage. no news of next election.

Hope tis helps!!

The answer is D.

My reasoning for each answer;

(A) is not true because if 2/3 (33%) of the voters supported the mayor and 55% of the voters were female, then it is possible that the mayor only received ~20% of the female vote (.33*.55). So this is not true.

(B) is not true because, as noted above, it is possible, from the given information that the mayor received much stronger support from males.

(C) is not true because the passage does not state how many candidates ran and the mayor only received a substantial, what ever that means (we don't know, it could be 1 vote), more votes than any other candidate. The mayor won with 2/3 of the vote. If there were two candidates then the other candidate had 1/3 (33%) of the vote, so C is wrong.

(D) must be true. The passage states that 55% of the votes were female, so 45% (100-55) must have been male. The passage also states that all the voters were 18-70. So, no voter was 75. Thus, 45% of the voters in the election were male and none of the were 75.

(E) assumes that voters will vote the same in the next election as they did in this last election. The passage does not indicate this, so E can not be true.

Hope this helps.

Good contenders are B and D. D wins over B. Why?

B. The incumbent mayor received stronger support from the female voters than from the male voters. Lets' analyze this scenario.

First scenario As per the passage winner got 67% votes. Now let's say that incumbent mayor got all 45% male votes and to match 67%, he need 22% extra. 22% will come from female voters. All other candidates got 33% of female votes. - this contradicts with option B
Second scenario incumbent mayor got all 55% of female votes and 12% of male votes. - this is with option B

Therefore, option B is may be true situation and can not be the answer.

Therefore, D is correct
