MS Marketing- US/ Canada

by alphanumericdelta » Mon Nov 04, 2013 10:22 am
Hi,

I have done my MBA- marketing from an average school in India. I am from engineering background and have multiple gaps in my career due to health problems. However, my overall grades and work experience (2.5 years) is good. Now I plan to move abroad for an MS marketing program. Will this be a good career choice? I have interest in Marketing and have won business competitions at national and international levels. I have interest in research. Should I consider MIM as well? Will Canada schools also open me up to good market opportunities? Please help.
GMAT Score: 600

Thanks,
AlphaNumeric

Hmmm.. well as an AdCom member the FIRST question I would ask is: why are you getting a second Marketing degree? I mean you have one already?! How will this help you? What re your goals?

Hi Jon,

The MBA degree introduced me to a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines in marketing. I developed a fundamental understanding of concepts, processes and applications involved in diverse areas of marketing. The extra-curricular activities during the MBA program gave me an opportunity to gain an overview of real-time marketing strategies followed in the industry. I aspire to take my understanding of business marketing to a next level and develop expertise in the sub-disciplines in which I find specific interest. These are digital marketing/ advertising. I have experience in digital media as online marketing manager. My understanding of the MS program is that it provides deeper, advanced & specialized research-based education in the chosen area. This is my motivation behind pursuing an MS degree in marketing/ digital marketing from a very good school. Moreover, I am targeting research-based roles in industry as a future employment for which profile an MS degree would be more relevant than an MBA.
Please advise and also suggest the best schools for such courses which will help me boost my career.

Thanks

Have you looked at the bios of people in these research roles to see what MS programs they attended. LinkedIn is a good tool for this too. But you might need a higher GMAT score. This ranking list amalgamates the various marketing programs but should give you a good starting point (https://www.best-masters.com/ranking-mas ... eting.html).

Hi Michael,

I have approached a couple of marketing background alumni from good schools like manderson, mays and others. They are in research roles in industry. I want to build a career in research. So far, on inquiring with these schools, I was not asked for a better gmat score, they said I have good experience and I am a strong candidate. Do you think I should go ahead? Will my MBA degree be a disadvantage when pursuing this degree? Please respond

Thanks.

Have you asked the schools specifically these questions because different schools might feel differently?

One of the difficulties is that almost everybody has admitted someone with a low GMAT score (even though the probabilities might be low). So, from their perspective, they might be asking you to apply because they would like to see your overall application since there is some chance you would be admitted. So, for example, Mays has an average GMAT score of 647 and a 10%-90% range of 600-710 (https://www.newgmat.org/texas-am-good-gm ... niversity/). Therefore, 10% of the class does score 600 or lower. But a significant percentage of those people probably come from underrepresented U.S. minority groups. Thus, I recommend for you to retake the GMAT exam.

Good luck,

Michael,

Yes I have emailed separate and specific responses to each. MOST of them were positive.
There is a slight problem with my gmat scores. This was my second attempt to gmat. I gave the first without preparation thinking that I will be able to crack it well. That was a big big mistake I realized.
I am fine with the third attempt but what I have gained info from the internet that it is not a good idea to attempt again and again as it decreases the chances of admission. What do you suggest?

Thanks

Retaking the GMAT for a third time does not decrease your admissions chances. So, I would recommend you retaking the exam.
