Do I have a chance to get in Baruch?

by sammizhu » Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:40 pm
Hi
I just got a GMAT 590 (m 49 V22) essay 4.5. I know my v is a bit lower. Anyway, I have 2 years experience with my own business and 4 years in marketing area. I graduated from a Canadian University with a GPA which is around 3.1(3.2). I am interested in applying MS in Real Estate of Baruch this fall. My question is that do I get chance to get in this program with the background. I know my GMAT is not good though, but this is my 2nd to take. (got 80 score increase)

Recognizing that your stats are not through the roof, they are still good enough to get you into this program. Baruch's non MBA 80% range for applicants is 510-700, and don't forget that they are not required to report to ranking agencies the scores from their MS program, just from their MBA program, so they are much more likely to "bend" for students applying to this program. What will matter most will be your ability to cast a clear and compelling vision for why you need the degree, what you will do with it, and what you have done so far which has prepared you to undertake it. good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I guess I will expand these thoughts during my personal statement. However, if I don't have any experience in real esate but with marketing, is that gonna hurt for me to apply this major. The other thing I am concering about is that Baruch says you must be over 40% on each section. However, my verb only is 22 and my essay is 4.5, they both are below the percentage. Will this affect to my process?

Thanks again

The lower your score, the more they will scrutinize the split. Try to come up with things from your academics which will innoculate their concerns about the GMAT. Remember, the 80% range means 20% of the admitted students fall outside that range--some above and some below. Your application will be considered in its entirety, so focus on your strengths and address your weaknesses directly. As for your marketing experience, tie it into how transferrable your skills will be in real estate. Also would help if you have done something, anything, whether personal or professional which has a real estate tie. At the very least, speak to how your unique experience will benefit classroom discussion as a different perspective on the built world. hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I am also interested in MS marketing at NYU at its continuing education program. Its Gmat's min request is 550. I know, my Gmat might be too low to apply this program because NYU is a top school. But I still wanna give myself a try. I also had two years experience being co-owner of a small retail business in Canada expect my 4 years experience in marketing. Do you think there is any chance if I have a good personal statement and a resume, showing this strength?
