One gram of a certain health food contains 7 percent of the minimum daily requirement of vitamin E and 3 percent of the minimum daily requirement of vitamin A. If vitamins E and A are to be obtained from no other source, approximately how many grams of the health food must be eaten daily to provide at least the minimum daily requirement of both vitamins?

A. 3
B. 7
C. 10
D. 14
E. 33

OA is E

Following is my doubt:-
How many grams of the food must be eaten daily to provide at least the minimum daily requirement of both vitamins?
It is interpreted as how many grams of the food must be eaten to provide at least 100% of A and E.

I understood the above part, which i wasn't sure at first but now it is clear to me. However, if the question asked about maximum daily requirement of both vitamins, then in that case should i have focused on Vitamin E instead of A ?

I don't know if it is an appropriate question to ask, but i will really appreciate if someone clears my doubt.

Hi vinni.k,

By definition, a "requirement" is a 'minimum', so the phrase "maximum daily requirement" would not be what that type of question would ask for. If the question asked "what is the least number of grams needed to receive 100% of the daily requirement of one (or "at least one") of the vitamins?", then you would focus on the Vitamin E data.

Then in that case for 100% of total daily requirement of vitamin E , 14.28gm of certain health food is required.

Am i correct ?

Since it will take more grams to get the 3 percent requirement, we can focus just on the number of grams that must be consumed to get the minimum daily requirement of vitamin A. Thus:

0.03n = 1

n = 1/0.03 = 100/3 = 33.33

(Note: Technically, the correct answer should be 34 instead of 33. If a person eats 33 g of the food, then he or she is just short of getting at least the minimum daily requirement of vitamin A. So even though 33.33 rounds down to 33, the correct answer is 34.)

Answer: E
