1) His uphill speed averaged 22 kilometers per hour, and his downhill speed averaged 48 kilometers per hour.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) His uphill speed averaged 22 kilometers per hour, and his downhill speed averaged 48 kilometers per hour.

Say the distance is 22*24 kms; I chose 22*24 kms so that the calculation becomes easy.

Thus, time taken going up = (22*24) / (22) = 48 hours and time taken going up = (22*24) / (48) = 22 hours

Total distance = 2*22*48 kms and total time taken = 22 + 48 = 70

Average speed = (2*22*48) / (70) kmph. Sufficient

2) The route is 16 kilometers each way.

We do not know the speeds. insufficient.

The correct answer: A
