a question about the probability

by smallville33 » Wed Apr 29, 2009 11:30 am
1. There are 8 magazines lying on a table; 4 are fashion magazines and the the other 4 are sport magazines. If 3 magazines are to be selected at random from the 8 magazines, what is the probability that at least one of the fashion magazines will be selected?

anyone know how to solve this problem?

I will post the answer later.

Thanks in advance!

Probability that none of the fashion magazines are selected is

4/8 * 3/7 * 2/6 = 1/14

Probability of at least 1 fashion magazine = 1 - P(no fashion magazines).

1 - 1/14 = 13/14

Total number of ways 3 magazines can be selected out of 8 = 8C3 = 56

Total number of ways all 3 magazines selected are sports magazines = 4C3 = 4

so probability of selecting 3 magazines such that all of them are sports = 4/56 = 1/14

Probability of selecting at least one fashion magazine = 1 - 1/14
= 13/14
