Things you CAN do 1 week before the test

by jsl » Fri Oct 10, 2008 8:41 am
Having read several posts suggesting that GMAT study tails off a week before the test, I would like some practical advice on HOW to do this... I'm sure a lot of people will feel in a similar way to me and want to tail off studying but can't beat the urge.

My question is... Can I spend the remaining few days before my GMAT test writing my MBA Admissions essays or should I really force myself to focus on relaxing and watching a movie?

There is a balance that you need to consider.

1. You need to keep on working on your essays. They, along with your GMAT, are some of the most important parts of your application. To take a long time away from them would not be a good idea (imho).

2. Make sure that you refresh yourself with at least a few questions. This may only be 10 or so questions a night. When you're finished the samples, listen to music, eat candy, jumping jacks, etc...whatever you do to destress. You want to be mentally prepared to make sure that you're ready.

3. Be confident. You've done the studying, and you've done your best to prepare for this event. If there are only a few days left, be confident in your abilities. Going into the test with a positive attitude will make a difference!

Good luck!

I don't see anything wrong with working on the essays - that's not really GMAT related. I do agree, though, that you shouldn't try to study more - sometimes students do more harm than good learning new things without time to practice them before the test. If you've studied hard, you should be confident that you're going to do well.

I might do a handful of questions a couple days before the test just to loosen up. I also like to do a few questions the day of the actual exam to get my mind going. Otherwise, I'd stay away from the GMAT for the few days before test day.

By the way, I recommend "Billy Madison" as a night-before-the-GMAT movie. Enjoy!
