A side of beef lost 35 percent of its weight in processing. If the side of beef weighed 546 pounds after processing, how many pounds did it weigh before processing?

A. 191
B. 355
C. 737
D. 840
E. 1,560

The OA is D.

I get the solution of this PS question as follow,

Let the weight of the beef before processing be 100 after processing, weight of the beef is 65

When the weight of the beef is 65 (after processing); weight of the beef before processing is 100

When the weight of the beef is 1 (after processing); weight of the beef before processing is 100/65

When the weight of the beef is 540 (after processing); weight of the beef before processing is (100/65)*540 => 840.

Is there a strategic approach to this question? Can any experts help, please?

Always keep your eye on the answer choices.
Since the weight loss = 35/100 = 7/20, the original weight decreases by 7/20.
Since the resulting weight is an INTEGER VALUE -- 546 -- the original weight must be a MULTIPLE OF 20.
Eliminate A, B and C.
Since option E -- 1560 pounds -- would have to decrease by more than 50% to yield a final weight of 546 pounds, eliminate E.

The correct answer is D.

We can create the equation where n = the weight of the beef before processing:

0.65n = 546

n = 546/0.65 = 840

Answer: D
