Hi All,

We're told that Maria wants to send a package overseas. She can either pay shipping company A an amount dependent on the DISTANCE of the delivery, or pay shipping company B an amount dependent on the WEIGHT of the package. We're asked which option is less expensive.

1) Company A charges $3.00 plus $0.01 per mile of shipment, and company B charges $5.00 plus $8.50 per pound.

Fact 1 gives us the shipping rates based on distance and weight, but we know nothing about the distance the package must travel nor the weight of the package.
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

2) The person who will receive the packages lives 3,900 miles away from Maria.

Fact 2 tells us how far the package must be shipped, but tells us nothing about the weight of the package nor the two shipping rates.
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
-Company A charges $3.00 plus $0.01 per mile of shipment, and company B charges $5.00 plus $8.50 per pound.
-The person who will receive the packages lives 3,900 miles away from Maria.

We know how much Company A's shipping would cost: 3 + 3900(.01) = $3 + $39 = $42. However, since we do not know the weight of the package, there's no way to determine the cost of shipping through Company B. Thus, the two costs could be equal or one cost could be higher than the other.
Combined, INSUFFICIENT
