This is one of the sample explanation PS questions given by Kaplan Premier Program:

If w>x>y>z on the number line and y is halfway between x and z, and x is halfway between 2 and z, then y-x/y-w=

1/4

1/3

1/2

3/4

1

The author applies the Picking Numbers stategy, assuming z=2, y=4, x=6. And then she states: That would make w=10. Why 10? Why not 8 for example?

Why 2a?
And maybe you have some sort of guide with basic math rules commonly met in Gmat? Any help would be really appreciated.
