Hello everyone! I am writing because I really need some advice, so here goes...

I am currently researching and narrowing down choices to start applying for graduate schools for fall 2011! I am hoping to be in a full time MBA or Master's program! (keeping the fingers crossed). I want to get into media management, marketing, and/or advertising. What are some good programs that are focused around this concentration? Also, I am debating if I should go for an MBA or Master's program. So far, I have fell in love with the Graduate Integrated Marketing Communications program offered at Northwestern, and I plan to definitely apply...but it is a Master's program. I have always wanted an MBA, but after researching this program, it seems to offer everything that is more specific to what I want to get into. Then on the other hand, I feel like an MBA is more credible. (I could be wrong!) Since I know I definitely want to stay focused around marketing & media management, I've tried looking for MBA programs that have concentrations. I came across Fordham University in New York and I notice that they offer an MBA with a concentration in communications & media management. I don't know much about this school, so could someone please give me some feedback?

I would appreciate any knowledge or advice that any of you may have for me! I am wanting to at least apply to 3 programs, so suggesting some programs for me to add to the table would be awesome! I am willing to go anywhere as far as the location...as long as the move is worth it, Im so there! Your thoughts?

Also look at MBA and Masters progarms at NYU, Columbia, and UCLA. You will find some very good options.

Generally speaking, MBA opens a lot more doors for you. But if you know precisely what you want to do and the Northwestern program gives you that, go for it. My recommendation is to apply to both kinds of programs (as long as they fit with your desired future career path) and to pick which one to go to later. The primary drawback with that approach is the amount of effort needed to put a great application together. But it's all worth the effort at the end.

Thanks so much for your feedback! That is the main reason why I still want to find an MBA program that has a specific concentration to the field that I want to get into. I know an MBA definitely has more benefits, so im just trying to find the right program. However, my intentions are to still apply to programs, whether it be MBA or Master's to see what happens. Do you know much about the MBA program at Fordham University? They have a concentration for the MBA in commuications & media management that Im interested in.

NYU has a specialization in Media, Entertainment and Technology and Columbia has a media specialization. At Columbia you can also apply for a dual MS/MBA program in Journalism and Business - Media Management and Business Communications. They appear to be really good programs so you might want to look into them. Also, Duke, MIT, UPenn in addition to NYU and Columbia sponsored an MBA Media and Entertainment Conference so its probably safe to say that they support and have at least a few resources for students in those areas.

Agree with KendraD's suggestions.

Fordham is a good backup option - its a middle tier program with a solid curriculum in MBA in communications and media management. But try to get into top-tier programs if you can. It will open even more doors for you.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I will definitely be researching your suggestions. I am attending the QS MBA Fair next month, and most of these schools will be there, so hopefully I will get more information and will be able to speak with recruiters face to face!

Hi Miss Tee,

I was going through this blog and realised you have/had the same predicament as me. I am too confused whether to pursue MS in Integrated Marketing from NYU or MBA in Communications and Media Management from Fordham.

I am currently working in NYC and intend to continue working and would thus be doing either of the course on a part-time basis.

I have work experience in entertainment marketing and am doing the course to move the ladder in the same field.

Can you please share the feedback and your decision on Fordham MBA in Communications and Media Management.

Thanks
Abhishek

Hi Abhishek!

I must say I'm happy that I'm not the only one that's a little undecided about what to do on this matter. Since I've posted here last, a lot has changed. My plan was to be applying for Fall 2011, but I decided to wait another year. So I will be applying Fall 2012 now. I needed to work on my GMAT score and felt I didn't have enough time to do that within the timeframe I was working with. But with that being said, it will allow me to do more research on programs, schools, etc. I feel good about waiting now because now I can actually plan to go to some of the school events throughout the year, so YAYYY for that! When are you looking to apply?

BTW, I noticed you said that you are currently working in New York. I may be relocating there soon for a job, which would be great since I want to go to graduate school out there!
