Design Engineer

by qwerasdf » Tue Jun 29, 2010 11:47 pm
Hi,
I am a design engineer (R&D)(Electronics)(Microprocessors) in one of my country's top defence companies. I have 2 years WE now and 3 years by the start of mba program next year.I want to apply in 1st and 2 round.I am looking statistics of the class of 2011 and 2010 and people from consulting and financial services constitute % 50 of the class in top mba programs.

1-) Is my career a major hurdle for top mba programs or since the diversity is considered, is my profile good?(I also want to switch career to finance or consulting)
2-) Also working in design jobs mitigate my low gpa in the eyes of admission team in top 15 because of its quantitative nature?

My brief Profile:
Gpa: 2.4
Gmat 780
Thanks in advance

Dear qwerasdf,

Your career is not a hurdle, and it might help you to stand out a bit if it is different enough from other applicants. There was a large number of folks from the consulting and financial services industries the past 2 years, but there was a large number of those folks returning to school due to layoffs in those industries. How the entering classes in 2011 look could be quite different. Since you are looking to make a significant career change, you do need to convey your understanding of that significance and how you feel the MBA will aid in that transition. Simply going to school and getting the degree is not enough to make that transition happen. As for mitigating your GPA, I do think your high GMAT and quantitative/analytical career will aid in that regard. However, I also think you should consider writing the optional essay on your GPA and provide evidence on how you will be a better student in business school.

Good luck,
Lisa
