MGMAT Quant ? WTH ?

by TkNeo » Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:46 pm
I have solved the GMAT Quant Review by GMAC.. I found all the questions way too easy ...

However, I just completed a MGMAT full length test and scored 48Q. Total incorrect questions in Quant was 16 that included guessing/skipping 7+ questions.

This is my second MGMAT test and i found the quant problems were very wordy and difficult. Does anyone know how representative MGMAT is of the real GMAT? I want to make sure that i don't alter my study plan based on the results of this MGMAT quant. !

In my opinion, there are certain MGMAT problems that are not representative of the GMAT problems. If you have completed the OG11 and the OG Q, you should have a pretty good idea of what problems fit the GMAC mold and which do not (wordy, needlessly complex problems that take more than 2 minutes on average to complete). For those problems, I just skipped them and instead I channeled that extra time to studying the MGMAT questions that I felt really represented the GMAT.

I agree with mayonai5e. MGMAT questions are needlessly wordy and complex. Some questions took me a good whole minute to read and understand. This is also the reason why I only took 1 timed MGMAT test. Having said all that, MGMAT explanations are really good and worth spending time on but don't take their scores or questions too seriously.

Have you taken any of the GMATPrep tests yet? They should be much more accurate in terms of difficulty. I think the official quant practice book is pretty old, isn't it? GMATPrep is much newer.

Yes, some of our math questions are too computation-intensive. Not all, but some. If you hit one that seems a little too ridiculous, don't worry about it.

Having said that - the math on the official test can get very difficult (though not quite in the same way - there's still usually a key to solving within 2 min, but it's a lot harder to find it). Be prepared - you will hit stuff on the official test that you cannot do in 2 minutes, no matter how good you get. If you're unprepared for that, you will spend too much time and get into trouble later in the section.

Also, on the official test (and the GMATPrep software), you will have experimental questions. Because experimental questions can fall at any difficulty level, if you are a very high level math person, you will get some "brain break" experimental questions - questions that are easier for you. Our tests (and prep tests in general, with the exception of GMATPrep) don't give you these brain breaks because we don't use experimental questions (though we're working on building that functionality into our tests as well).

So that's good - but if you're a high level math tester (and TkNeo, you are, if you scored a 48 on our quant section), be prepared - you will have questions you can't do. Most people have to guess on 5-7 questions (educated guesses - not random!) When I take the test (99th percentile), I usually guess on 2-3 questions - so it really doesn't matter how good you get. You're going to be making some guesses along the way (or you're going to run out of time... in which case, you'll still be making guesses...)
