Bit of a disappointment - 760 (49/44)

Hey folks -

Took my GMAT last night and while i did pretty well, was a little disappointed with my score, particularly with my math... which I had been kicking ass on in practice exams. My expectation was in the 760-780 range.

Practice tests:
MGMAT (free): 710 (46/41)
MGMAT #1: 670 (45/36)
MGMAT #2: 730 (49/40)
MGMAT #3: 720 (48/40)
MGMAT #4: 750 (51/41)
GMPREP #1: 750
MGMAT #5: 780 (51/45)
GMPREP #2: 770
GMPREP #1: 780 - only a couple dupe questions.. and i had to guess 2 or 3 RC questions because the passage didn't display correctly

I also took 3 GMAT Focus exams:

GMAT Focus - 08/02/2008 - 49-51 (no mistakes)
GMAT Focus - 08/01/2008 - 47-51 (2 mistakes)
GMAT Focus - 07/28/2008 - 48-51 (1 really, really stupid mistake)


During the actual exam, my timing was fine, but I could tell that I wasn't performing up as well as I should have on the math. There was too much I had to think about, and the fact that i had to think about stuff was really bothering me. Very luckily, my last question was one that, if I had had earlier in the test would have probably forced me to cancel my score. It was something that the night before I had been thinking about... but forgot what I had done. So I needed to go through the whole thing again, but wasn't sure I was right. If that had happened earlier, it would have been hanging over my head the whole time, and I know I would have performed even more poorly. Luckily i was able to figure out that I got it right during the break and went in for verbal feeling better.

Anyhow, if there's interest, I'll post some more info.

good job! I totally understand your disappointment. I had a similar case, never scored below 50 in pracrice, but eneded up with 49 on the GMAT.

But,hey, if you look at thing in the right perspective, it is a very good score and one to be proud of.

Interesting thing is the law of dimishing returns
I got Q49 V49 but only 10 points more - 770!!!

heh certainly diminishing return on the verbal side! however, with a 50 on math, i would have gotten those extra 10... In any case... certainly not the end of the world, but i'm not thrilled.

:roll: at this entire post. The difference between 760 and 770 is miniscule. Those 10 points won't make much of a difference with regards to the rest of your application. I guess I can understand being frustrated with yourself since you have such high expectations, but I don't understand why you would broadcast this information to a community, which for the large part, would be thrilled with a 760.

Anyways, best of luck to you in the application process.

Great score... you seem to be having a solid foundation in Math but anways can you tell us...
What materials pertaining to GMAT do you suggest to drill harder in Math???

uhh don't think i said anything about a free gmat focus exam.. I had to pay the 70 or so bucks for the 3 pack. Was worth it though i think... the questions we good.

I never said the extra 10 points would make a difference with regards to admissions... but i'm entitled to feel disappointed if i didn't think like I performed at my peak. Is there really much of a difference between and 760 and a 770? obviously not.

Congratulations, that is an excellent score. I can also understand your disappointment on the quant score but at 750+ levels I dont think it matters. Best of luck with the rest of your application.

Hi first of all congralutions. Please can u tell me are the gmat focus test worth. Is the difficulty level same as the actual Gmat. Please can u tell me in detail about the focus

i definitely think the gmat focus questions were closest to the real exam. definitely worth it.

You seem like a pure academic person, who gets disappointed when they feel they were performing to their top ability and ends up scoring 10 less points and is disappointed.

What did you expect to get out of posting this here? You just venting about the 10 points?

Learn to deal with when you fall short in your expectations, or you'll be real upset in life when people who are not as smart as you still excel and possibly advance quicker and higher than yourself.

My comments might be assumptions of you, but you come across as a perfectionist and often these types of people get beat up in the business world.

lastly, I'm just targeting your post because I'd do a lot of unwanted things to be able to study hard and get a score like yours.

I'm not complaining over any number of points... I'm complaining about feeling like i didn't do as well as i could have. If i felt like i done my best that day, I would be really pleased.

I'm certainly not an academic and certainly not a perfectionist.. but I am competitive and like to perform at a top level.
