590! How to improve?

by [email protected] » Sun Jan 11, 2009 6:05 am
Hi

I just took Powerprep Test1 and scored 590.
I plan to reach 700+ and have 2 months to go.
Found out that due to time pressure I made mistake on all the last 5 Quant question and the percentile on quant went to 44 with score Q34
verbal percentile is 79 withe score v 36.

I am quite confused on this score. Need som help to see through this score. Also, what is the best way to analyze the test I took?I want to take the maximum out of my first test experience so as to improve in 2nd test.

Thanks in advance !

Your score is based on a few things:

1. How many questions you got right vs. wrong. Obviously, this is important, but your score is based on far more than this.
2. Where in the test you got your wrong answers. Generally speaking, earlier questions are slightly more important than are later questions.
3. The big one: the level of difficulty of the questions you got right. Harder questions are worth more points than are easier questions.

So, there's really no way to analyze your score much deeper than: you are well above average in verbal and below average in math. You probably noticed that even though your RAW verbal score was lower than your raw math score, your PERCENTILE verbal score was higher. This is normal; the scores from each section can't really be compared to each other.

As for improvement: go out and get a copy of the Official Guide and a prep guide of your choice. Your goal is to relate the things you learn in the prep guide to the questions in the OG, whose explanations generally aren't the greatest.

Good luck!
