This is my first posting on beat the gmat site. First of all, thanks to the founders of beat the gmat site. It is extremely useful.

I went through a few popular posts in this site and prepared my plan based on my strengths and weaknesses. This is the 4th week of my preparation. I am spending about 15-20 hours a week. First 2 weeks I spent on Quant and I have been spending time on SC since last 2 weeks. I plan to take one prep test each week and I took 3 tests so far. My Quant scores are reasonable, but my verbal scores need much improvement. Here are my scores.

GMAT Prep 1: 490 (Quant - 39 & Verbal 19) - (before starting the prep)
Veritas Prep (GMAT Simulator) 1: 510 (Quant - 42 & Verbal 14) - I practiced just quant the night before
Veritas Prep (GMAT Simulator) 2: 520 (Quant - 35 & Verbal 23) - I guess my quant score was low because I did not practice for almost 10 days before taking this test.

I have completed Veritas OnDemand SC 2 classes and practice questions in SC workbook.

Planning to go through VeritasPrep ondemand classes CR & RC.
I am also planning to practice SC, CR & RC in OG 12.

As someone suggested in this forum, I am also planning to practice 20 Quant questions from OG everyday (or alternate days) to keep my quant skills fresh. I am following the correction worksheet and spending time on going through my answers.

I am targeting to score about 650.

1. Is this a reasonable target given that I have only 5 weeks to prepare?
2. Do I need to make any changes to my plan to improve my verbal scores?
3. Are VeritasPrep scores good representatives of GMAT test? I did not see much about VeritasPrep in this forum.
I am open to suggestions to go through some other material instead of VeritasPrep.

Hey scorewell,

Welcome to BTG! Thanks for sharing your experience. Just a few thoughts on what you wrote:

1) Those Veritas Simulator tests tend to be a little tougher on verbal scores and questions than other tests, so there's a fair chance that your overall and verbal scores are slightly underestimated in those numbers you reported.

2) Even more important than tracking your progress on those scores is tracking your process on the questions. Which types of trap answers seem to keep catching you (for example, on CR, you're likely missing questions when you mis-read the conclusion)? Which strategies or concepts just aren't clicking for you? Where are you spending too much time? Practice tests are incredibly valuable in giving you a forum to check your weaknesses and performance pitfalls so that you can address them.

3) In terms of whether you need to make changes in your plan, I'd just suggest that you make sure to include time to analyze what you're learning at the end of each test or study session. "Doing problems" is helpful, but only at a baseline level; learning from those problems (for example, "I tend to infer "-est" words into conclusions and need to be more careful" or "I need to be more systematic in breaking down SC errors instead of jumping to eliminate uncomfortable phrases or idioms") is what's really important.

4) Based on what you wrote I don't see any reason that you can't get near 650...ultimately the path to get there is one probably more full of "awareness" than one of just "work", though. Make sure you're paying attention to items that are holding your score down and causing you to miss questions. If you buy into that thought process you can make some pretty big improvements pretty quickly.
