Manhattan GMAT instructors, question here

In your books, your company talks about different approaches towards algebraic translation, primarily direct algebra vs the hybrid method of algebra and picking numbers. In the long-run, do you think it's more prudent to focus on developing pure algebra skills, or do you recommend going with an easier approach whenever possible?
