Has Brand X been purchased by more than 50% of the 5,000 people in Westport?

1. Brand Y has been purchased by 75% of the people in Westport.
2. Brand X has been purchased by exactly 2,200 people in Westport.

Statement 1 is irrelevant to the questions
Statement 2 says 2200 people of Westport have purchased it which is < 5000/2 = 2500; thus I'd go with B.

in (1) is it X or Y?

Yep, 2 different brands. It is Brand Y in statement 1.

I agree. But, the reason I posted this question is because I selected B as my answer, but the answer provided in Princeton book is D. There is no explanation provided. So, I thought I will discuss in this forum to check if I am missing anything.

Not very surprising I've found lots of bad DS questions in the Princeton Review book.
