Elk now live

by SuchiKumar » Thu Jun 19, 2008 1:42 pm
Elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, which would make it seem that elk are mountain dwellers, while they once ranged over virtually all of the continental United States except for a small strip in the extreme Southwest.

A. Elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, which would make it seem that elk are mountain dwellers, while

B. The fact that elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains would make it seem that they are mountain dwellers, but

C. It would seem that elk would be mountain dwellers because of their living now solely almost in the Rocky Mountains, but still

D. Now living almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, it would seem that elk were mountain dwellers, although
E. It seems that elk would be mountain dwellers from the fact that they now live solely almost in the Rocky Mountains, since

The OA is A

Could you explain how did you get B and why is A wrong.

A. Elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains, which would make it seem that elk are mountain dwellers, while...what does "it" refer to , also which is incorrect here

B. The fact that elk now live almost solely in the Rocky Mountains would make it seem that they are mountain dwellers, but... "they" here is ambigious

My pick is B

While "they" in the non underlined part tells us that Elk is plural.

Which in A refers to to RM and is incorrect as you pointed out

Also it and they both seem to refer to Elk in A.

B is my pick too. In (A) which wrongly points to RM.

few points of contention as far a option B is concerned -
1)what is "it" refering to?
2)antecedant of "they" is also not clear. is they refering to Elk or Mountains?

Thanks!

LG,

It is NOT referring to elk. It is referring to the thought that elk are mountain dwellers

Also they is not referring to Rocky mountains just because its plural. Rocky mountains are mountain dwellers?? Does not make sense correct?

Also In A, Which refers to the wrong rocky mountains. Its not RM, its the fact that ELK lives in RM makes it seem so.

I guess its a question of which is least contentious :)
