In recent ears cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

A)in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
B)in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
C)partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics.
D)partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers.
E)partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers.

IMO D

we need a clause starting with partly

A and B are out due to parallel
C and E are not a clause;

Answer: D

But passive is not always wrong, even i thought D was the best choice.
Any other reason for eliminating D.

I think E.

D is passive. Moreover the steers aren't acquiring the characteristics on their own, as is suggested by D. Instead crossbreeding(initiated by breeder) is responsible for this acquisition.

But but I am not a very big fan of E eider, E breaks paralleism "Partly to" and "partly because"....But still E is a best choice when compared with the rest[That's what I feel , you may disagree though] :)

I guess it's completely wrong .. but I'll go with C just because the other option E .. says "partly to acquire ... " - I have never experienced this construction of a sentence before .. using 'to acquire' as a verb.
