Ostrich or Tigers

by harsh.champ » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:52 pm
A zookeeper counted the heads of the animals in a zoo and found it to be 80. When he counted the legs of the animals he found it to be 260. If the zoo had only 2 animals- ostrich and tigers, how many tigers were there in the zoo?

(A) 30
(B) 40
(C) 50
(D) 60
(E) 70

The OA is C.
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

The OA is C.
a - no of ostriches
b - number of tigers

a+b = 80
2a+4b = 260
a+2b = 130

b =50
a =30
No of tigers = 50
Let's build a system of equation:

(1) o + t = 80
(2) 2*o + 4*t = 260

o = (80-t). So 2*(80-t) + 4t = 260 => by solving per t you get t = 50.

The solution is C.

Let X be the no. of ostrich and Y be the no. of tigers
So X+Y = 80
Also 2X+4Y = 260
Y = 50 Ans C
