Poor writers - LSAT

by arora007 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 9:06 pm
Poor writers often express mundane ideas with elaborate syntax and esoteric vocabulary.
Inattentive readers may be impresses but may well misunderstand the writing, while alert readers will easily see through the pretentiousness. Thus a good principle for writers is: ----------------.

Which one of the following completes the passage most logically?

a) the simpler the style, the better the writing
b) inattentive readers are not worth writing for
c) only the most talented writers can successfully adopt a complex style
d) a writing style should not be more complex than the ideas expressed
e) alert readers are the only readers who are sensitive to writing style.

I don't think this is a good GMAT-esque question.

But I pick D.

Thus a good principle for writers is: ----------------.

a) the simpler the style, the better the writing - contender
b) inattentive readers are not worth writing for - this has nothing to do with a good principle for writer.
c) only the most talented writers can successfully adopt a complex style - exaggerated.
d) a writing style should not be more complex than the ideas expressed - contender
e) alert readers are the only readers who are sensitive to writing style. - this is more an observation than a good principle.

The stimulus doesn't say anything about simplicity being better, but it does imply that complexity without sufficient idea isn't good. So I am sticking with D.
Yep.
