Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Concerns about public health led to the construction between 1876 and 1904 of three
separate sewer systems to serve
metropolitan Boston.

A. Concerns about public health led to the construction between 1876 and 1904 of three
separate sewer systems to serve
B. Concerns about public health have led to the construction of three separate sewer
systems between 1876 and 1904 to serve
C. Concerns about public health have led between 1876 and 1904 to the construction of
three separate sewer systems for serving
D. There were concerns about public health leading to the construction between 1876
and 1904 of three separate sewer systems serving
E. There were concerns leading between 1876 and 1904 to the construction of three
separate sewer systems for serving

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice was option A

Regards
Deano.

A should be the correct answer.

B implies that "between x & Y" were serving the metropolis. The rest are non sensical.

Is "A" the original answer ?

We require past tense, not HAVE LED - drop B/C

D - it appears LEADING modifies public health (or it could modify CONCERNS as well). If it modifies PUBLIC HEALTH thn its incorrect (as it will change the original meaning of sentence). If it modifies CONCERNS thn we have an ambiguity. Drop it

E - Placement of modifier 'between 1876 and 1904' is inappropriate. It should be closer to THE CONSTRUCTION. Drop it

IMO A (in general TO SERVE, Signifies PURPOSE OR INTENT OF STH. Here also, TO SERVE shows that THE CONSTRUCTION was done with an intent to SERVE BOSTON). Having said that, this construction appears awkward to me...but still IMO A
