Letter of Rec / Essay ?

by oustone85 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 7:33 am
I have a question regarding my 2 letters of recommendation. Would it be frowned upon if both letters of rec came from my current job? I am definitely planning on having my current supervisor write one of them, however, i'm debating if I should have my manager write the other. Do you think this will come off as lazy or redundant? My current job is where the bulk of my experience has come from, so my options are limited as far as professional recs go.

Also, do the application essays tend to change much from year to year? For example, i plan on applying to SMU Cox and one of the required essays on the 2009 App was to describe short and long term career objectives and how a degree from SMU would help me acheive these goals. Since the 2010 app isnt out yet, is it safe to assume this question will appear again? I'm wanting to jump on these essays as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Dear oustone85,

It is perfectly acceptable to have both letters of recommendation come from your current company. It is not a disadvantage at all. Ideally, it would be great to get people with different perspectives on you as a professional.

The essay question you refer to on career goals and why SMU is a pretty standard question asked in many different ways. So, I think you are safe to go ahead and start working on the essay. Even if the wording of the question changes, you should be able to easily adapt what you have written as the answer won't change much.

Good luck,
Lisa
