Profile Evaluation

by MBA_in_2011 » Tue May 25, 2010 7:56 pm
I have a low GPA (2.2) from a Top 50 University in Computer Science.
But subsequently, I have attained a masters in technology (not great GPA), a masters in business research (very good GPA) and I would be completing a PhD in Business Admin in about a year.

My post-grad degrees have also been from Top 50 universities and have been all part-time.
It is possible that my undergrad degree was somewhat affected by health issues (went through cancer).

I have worked for around 9 years (half of it has been in IT research, and the other half as a manager and a strategist with a reknowned healthcare organization). I have managed teams with around 15 people at a time.

I believe I would be able to score around 720+ in my GMAT.

I am interested in 1-year MBA programmes such IMD, Insead, HEC, SAID, Judge, Vlerick, etc.

What are my chances ? Or would my low undergrad GPA be a real deal killer ?

Low GPA during your Undergrad program in your case may not matter that much in your case since you've got 2 master's degree and a phd. The thing is - you've to really think through why do you want to go for an MBA after all these degrees. what do you plan to do with the degrees you've got in hand and how will an additional degree i.e. MBA help you? So think along the terms of short term and long term goals.

You will need to really take time and come up with a solid application since you are a non- traditional candidate.

Good Luck.

With your strong academic background you run the risk of being labeled as a "professional student". The admissions department can reasonably ask why you need a masters when you already have both a masters and a PhD in business-related subjects. You will have to work very hard to convince them that you need an MBA. Think about your career path and how it would change by adding an MBA to the four degrees you have earned. You will have to explain the difference between the education you have had so far and what you would get in an MBA program and why that matters for your career objectives.

With nine years' experience, you might want to think about a very focused Executive MBA rather than a standard MBA. You could then argue you needed the coursework to add a specific function to your skill set.
