700 in MGMAT to 640 in GPREP!!!

by riteshbindal » Sun Aug 02, 2009 7:18 pm
I am really confused with what my real score can be. I took MGMAT test last week and scored 700 (Q47/V38). I thought that this is a decent score as I have always seen that people score around 30 - 50 more in real GMAT than they score in MGMAT.
Then I took GMAT Prep 1 today and scored a meager 640 (Q49/V28)!!!
V28 is pretty low.

If we consider first 10 questions, then I did 7/10 correct in quanta and 8/10 correct in verbal. I thought this should have boosted my score but ended up getting 49 in Quanta and just 28 in Verbal.

When I analyzed the type of questions I did wrong, I found out that
S.C. - 5/16 correct (31%)!!!
R.C. - 9/13 correct (69%)
C.R. - 8/12 correct (66%)

S.C. was never such a major issue for me. In MGMAT, my avg difficulty of right answer is 690 and I thought that this is not so bad.

I really don't know what to do now. I have just one more GPrep left to assess my capability but I am not sure as what should I work on. Should it be just S.C.? If yes, then from which book?

Please help. Help of experts will really be appreciated!

Thanks,
Ritesh

The same happened to me. On MGMAT exams i am scoring 640,650.In GMAT prep, i scored 620 (Q:48,V:28).Actual exam is on 25th. Trying hard to improve verbal.

I would say, verbal part is relatively easy in MGMAT

There is one obvious problem with your scores. Verbal!! And out of that SC needs a lot of work. I have the same problem too. But my SC has improved a bit. I get 4 to 5 SC wrong in any given test and I am trying to cut it down to 2 or 3. You know what go over the manhattan SC guide in detail. I fact dont just go over. Dig through it. Understand it word by word.
The issue is the exhaustive list of idioms. I am lazy to do that to be honest. But it can make a difference between a 700 and a 720 or a 750 and a 750. There is nothing wrong in memorising that list blindly. There is no logic to idioms so there is nothing you can do about it other than memorize.
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.
