South Korea has witnessed the world’s most dramatic growth of Christian congregations; church membership is expanding by 6.6 percent a year, fully two-thirds of the growth coming from conversions rather than the population increasing.(A) coming from conversions rather than the population increasing
(B) coming from conversions rather than increases in the population
(C) coming from conversions instead of the population’s increasing
(D) is from conversions instead of population increases
(E) is from conversions rather than increasing the population

Need explanation please.

IMO B.

South Korea has witnessed the world’s most dramatic growth of Christian congregations; church membership is expanding by 6.6 percent a year, fully two-thirds of the growth coming from conversions rather than the population increasing.

(A) coming from conversions rather than the population increasing
Conversions compared to increasing.

(B) coming from conversions rather than increases in the population
Correct.

(C) coming from conversions instead of the population’s increasing
Conversions compared to increasing.

(D) is from conversions instead of population increases
Creates Run on sentence.....because of presence of definite verb "is"

(E) is from conversions rather than increasing the population
Creates Run on sentence.....because of presence of definite verb "is"

B is the best choice..
A is not parallel X rather than Y
C X instead of Y, X and Y should be nouns..cross it off not preferable
D, E - sentence fragment main clauses separated by comma

Could you please explain ? Why did ''...is'' create run on sentence?

If we consider D...then the sentence becomes as below:

church membership is expanding by 6.6 percent a year, fully two-thirds of the growth is from conversions instead of population increases

The above sentence now consist of two fully independent clauses:

1. church membership is expanding by 6.6 percent a year.
2. two-thirds of the growth is from conversions instead of population increases.

Since both of them are complete independent sentence, so we need to have a coorinating conjuction like say and, but etc. etc....basically two independent clauses cannot be separated by just comma.
