How can I offset a low quant score?

by mzm119 » Sun Nov 23, 2008 1:25 pm
I took the GMAT yesterday and scored a 640. I was in the 92nd percentile (41) for verbal and the 46th percentile (36) for the quant. I had never scored anywhere near that low in quant on my practice tests but that's beside the point. I graduated from Penn State and am trying to return and gain acceptance into Smeal. Their average GMAT is around 650 so I'm in the range but I'm worried my exceptionally low quant score will hurt my chances.

With a marketing/recruiting background, I don't have the quantitative experience to offset my score like some others do. Should I retake the GMAT? I'm worried I'll score similary in math but get a lower verbal score. Do you think enrolling in a basic intro to stat class at a local college to show my initiative in improving my quantitive skills will help offset my score? At PSU, I received a B in Stat200 (Elementary statistics) but a friend of mine in Duke's MBA program suggested I take this route.

Thanks in advance!

Dear mzm119,

I think you are better off taking some quantitative courses, specifically college algebra and calculus, than retaking your GMAT at this point. There are many schools offering online courses that you can complete quickly. Finance professors suggest math courses over an accounting or economics course as you will be expected to have proficiency in calculus in your core finance courses. If you would prefer a classroom setting, you can go to any local school, community college or university.

Good luck,
Lisa

So are you saying I should just move forward with the application process instead of retaking the GMAT? Or did you mean to say "then" and not "than"? I did not take calculus as an undergrad but did get an A in college algebra as a freshman and a B in elementary stat sophomore year. Should I consider retaking those or just enroll in calculus? Thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it.

As I stated previously, I think courses are a better route than retaking the GMAT if you want to apply right now to start school in fall 2009. If you are not planning to apply until next year, then I think you should still take the math courses prior to retaking the GMAT. If you have not done algebra for over 5 years, you might consider taking college algebra again as a refresher prior to taking calculus.

Lisa
