Being a United States citizen since 1988 and born in Calcutta in 1940, author Bharati Mukherjee has lived in England and Canada, and first came to the United States in 1961 to study at Iowa Writers' Workshop.

D should be wrong because it is not parallel around "and", right?

"being born..." vs. "having been..."

Other thaan that, I think D is fine, "being" seems to be used properly to describe the noun that follows the comma.

E is also asymetric around "and" and B seems to imply that she was a united states citizen before she was born.

Both A and C seem fine to me. What's up with that?

Could someone explain why she has lived is correct? It is Present perfect tense, seeming odd to me?

Hi confused13,

By using the phrase "she has lived", the implication is that Bharati Mukherjee is still alive. Furthermore, while she has lived in those two locations, the implication is that she now lives somewhere else (probably in the United States, given the last part of the sentence).
