Help, please! Profile Evaluation

by luckyfella » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:04 pm
Hello, group. I just finished the GMAT and can now finally prepare to apply to business school. Before doing so, I was wondering if someone who had gotten into one of the top 10 business schools either in the U.S. or the U.K. can evaluate my profile for competitiveness. I am actually a medical school student and have little or no idea as to how the process goes. I have a general idea of what I need, but specific feedback helps very much and is most appreciated. Before posting anything, I want to say that I understand how listing accomplishments can be taken as arrogant, but let me assure you that I, like many people, have failed at many things and understand how fortunate I am to have the little I have. My accomplishments are really those of all the people that have helped me in life and, most importantly, God. It is a dream to go to Harvard School of Business or Stanford and later start a business venture that will create a legacy for my family to be proud of. If you have any help, please let me know how I can become a more competitive applicant. Anyway, here goes:

Work experience:
-Currently studying for my MD @ a top 10 U.S. medical school
-Worked as a paid teaching assistant for multiple Chemistry labs and 1 graduate-level Histology lab during my Sophomore-Senior yrs. in college
-1 medical internship in undergrad
-1 medical research internship in undergrad at a U.S. medical center

Leadership & Volunteerism:
-Treasurer for 2 years for the Rotaract Club (a division of the Rotary Club for university students) in undergrad
-Coordinated and volunteered in a trip to Mexico to renovate an elementary school as part of Rotaract
-Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for 2 years in undergrad

Academics:
GPA: 3.76/4.00 Biology B.S. at University of Texas branch university
GMAT: 750

Others:
-Fluent in 1 language other than English and conversational in a 3rd
-Received a full scholarship to study my 3rd language of interest abroad in Europe during undergrad
-Mexican-American (Not sure if that really matters unless some B-schools really seek to have diversity?)
-1st to attend college in the U.S.
-"disadvantaged" (I put that in quotations b/c although my family did not have much money, I had 2 wonderful, loving parents whom I could not have done anything without.)
-Experiences: lost a lot of my school savings in stock market trading (I know...); working on starting a venture (I'm not sure how much that counts even though I created a formal business plan.)

Any suggestions help. Please let me know if I stand a chance of getting accepted into Harvard or Stanford school of business. Any constructive criticisms are also welcome with your suggestions for improving my application. This forum has already helped me out so much with GMAT, and now I would like to ask for honest opinions. I just really need to make this happen for myself and my family.

Thank you, Lord, for listening to my prayers.

There are many strong factors in your application including your excellent undergraduate record, your GMAT and your medical school experience. However, your lack of business experience will be a barrier. A successful work experience is important for several reasons. It shows that an applicant understands what is involved in the business world, it demonstrates that the applicant can perform in that environment; and it gives the applicant skills and insights that can contribute to class learning. Your challenge will be to explain why you are turning away from your medical education to pursue a business career and why you believe you will be successful.

The good news is that your background can be a great advantage. Your medical school experiences would give you a basis from which to contribute in the classroom. Your first step should be to register with The Consortium https://www.cgsm.org/ This outstanding organization is dedicated to increasing the enrollment of "underrepresented minorities" (African-American, Hispanic, and Native American) in graduate business school. They provide outstanding help with applications and offer full tuition scholarships.

Good luck and let me know how you do.
