My advice is to study now and get the GMAT done with as soon as possible. That will give you more time to research schools, work on applications, and improve other areas in your profile.

FYI, I took my test a year ago and I am not applying until 2012. Trust me, it feels good to have the GMAT out of the way!

My view is to study early and often. You really want to be prepared for the test, something to which hundreds (thousands?) of posters on this forum will attest.
Then, if you are unhappy with your score early, you will be able to study for and take the test again. If you get backed up against a deadline, and you are unhappy with your score, then you will not be able to study enough to improve it.
Many admissions officers I have talked to feel that if you take it a second time, you are at least trying, even if you do not get the score you ultimately want.
If you knock it out of the park, you've got that out of the way, and you can concentrate on researching schools, meeting alumni, doing the hard work of self-exploration in the admissions process, and writing great essays.

The best time to take the GMAT is when YOU are ready. If you are taking a prep course, your teacher or tutor is the best person to tell you when to take the test. The score is good for five years, so there is no risk to taking the test early as long as you are confident of your score.

As for application dates, the top schools start accepting applications in the early fall. Be sure to check their websites. Some don't post the current year's application questions until late August. If you are looking to start school in 2012, that means August of 2011 will be the first time you can see the essays you will need to write.

Most schools start in the early fall, although a few have spring starts. Again, you will need to check out the specific schools.
