scored 710..please advise

by smriti.sg » Mon Apr 06, 2015 8:04 pm
Hello
I took GMAT and scored 710. The problem is I scored only 3 in IR. How much is this going to effect my application?
I used to hit like 750 in prep tests and my target colleges were HBS, INSEAD, Oxford , ISB type.
I am working in power industry for 6.5 years as automation engineer and do have some international exposure dealing with international clients. I am also leading a team of 3-4 engineers.
On extra curricular front I lead a group responsible for CSR activities and was engaged with an NGO educating poor kids for like a year. I am also involved in organizing team building activities in my department.
In college i was engaged in robotics & dramatics.
My highschool percentage was 93 ,intemediate 86 and btech 75.
please advice which colleges I can target.

Thanks for sharing your profile. I don't believe your 3 will affect your candidacy much. Your overall score is much more important here, now if you're targeting those schools listed you are a bit below the averages so do keep that in mind which should be more of a concern

Hi there,

I agree that while a 3 in IR is not ideal, that won't be the reason why you don't get in. What matters more is your overall academic profile. A 710 is a good score, but keep in mind that you should consider the pool in which you'll be considered. Unfortunately, this is where ethnicity, gender, and industry come into play. Are you in an overrepresented pool? If so, targeting schools like HBS might be a stretch, so if that is a hard and fast goal of yours, you may want to consider retaking the GMAT.

Also, It'll be important for me to understand your undergraduate GPA and your involvement during that time. Also, what more can you share about your professional experiences? You have the appropriate work experience in terms of duration, but what did you accomplish? Same goes for your work with the NGO - did you lead any initiatives? Did you impact change? These are important leadership components vital to your profile.

Probably not the insight you were looking for, but would love to hear about the rest of your story to get a more holistic picture of your background.

With a 710 and what I've been able to glean from your profile you should look at maybe Oxford Said, Cambridge Judge, and any top 11-20 schools from the US News Ranking in the US. It sounds like you have a few extracurriculars/volunteer activities but nothing that you have done really long-term...is that right? You're an engineer who is about 29 years old? I'd be interested to know where you're from, where you went to school etc.
It's hard to get a good feel without seeing a resume.

I do offer two free services Background Analysis & School Selection and Ding Reviews if you're interested

I don't think a three on the IR is a total deal breaker. 750 is a really good score that you should be proud of. At this point you need to really work on your essays and resumes so every other part of your application meets that 750 standard. Also make sure you have the right recommenders in place. Good luck to you!
