Help Required....

by abhishek.pati » Sun May 29, 2011 10:43 pm
Puritan fanatics brought to civil and military affairs a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it.

(A) but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it
(B) but which were in fact a natural outgrowth of it
(C) but which were in fact natural outgrowths of it
(D) but it was in fact a natural outgrowth of them
(E) which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

Can someone answer the above question......I am confused between B and C.

IMO C
"coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose" is a plural subject, so the verb should be plural too. Only in option B and C "were" properly refers back to the plural subject "coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose"

In option B "outgrowth" is singular and cannot be used for plural noun "coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose". Instead we need plural noun "outgrowths" (means developments).

This can simply be written as "coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose WERE in fact natural outgrowths(developments)"

So , C

Here antecedent for the word 'it' in option C is "religious zeal".

I would like an expert to explain the logical meaning of the whole sentence , because I do not want to confuse anyone.

Changes the meaning. It modifies religious zeal but it should exactly modify/describe Plural a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose

Can someone answer the above question......I am confused between B and C.
IMO C

a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which WERE(a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose) in fact a natural outgrowth of IT(religious zeal).
